US Charts Review

This week is one of the slowest we’ve seen for urban sales: no top 5 debut, and noticeable absence of Fat Joe and Harlem’s rappers DJ Webstar & Jim Jones, whose albums have not debuted in the Top 50…

However, Jay-Z finally managed to get a platinum plaque for the “Blueprint III.” The ROC Nation boss moved another 65,000 copies to break the ‘milli’ bar. After a month in stores, the album sold 1,057,000 units and stands at #5.

Still holding to a Top 10 spot, Mariah Carey is #6 this week with 54,000 albums sold. In 2 weeks, Mimi has sold 226,000 copies of “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” a decent number but still far less than her precedent projects.

The momentum of Whitney Houston’s “I Look To You” remains strong. The diva grabs the #5 position with 36,000 copies. Total sales for the comeback album reach 724,500 units.

The Black Eyed Peas enjoy an amazing longevity on the charts. Despite being available for almost 5 months, “E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies)” sits at the #23 with 25,000 copies sold. Total sales for the LP have reached 1,194,000 units!

Canadian MC Drake pushed 20,000 copies of his debut mixtape “So Far Gone” and slides 12 spots to finish this fourth week of availability at #30. The project pushed 160,000 units so for: not bad for a first release (and it’s a mixtape!).

At the bottom of the charts, R&B sensation Trey Songz loses three spots and ends at #41, followed by Maxwell at #42. The soulful singer is approaching platinum status with 813,000 copies of his album “BLACKSummers’night” sold.

Kid Cudi’s album definitely did not live up to the hype. For its fourth weeks on the shelves, “Man On The Moon” only moved 13,000 units. Kanye’s protégé slipped 12 spots to end at #48: quite disappointing numbers as compared to the buzz created by the first single “Day’N’Nite.” The album total sales currently stand at 166,000, while no second single seem to be on deck…

Hopefully, next week’s sales will be stimulated by R&B crooner Mario’s new album. But it seems that the next big landing on the charts will occur on November 23rd when several heavyweights will drop their albums… Indeed Rihanna, 50 Cent, Birdman, Jay Sean and Lady Gaga are expected to compete for a Top 5 spot!
