Rapper Jamal “Shyne” Barrow a former Bad Boy recording artist and one time Diddy protégé was granted on Tuesday, August 4 an early prison release date after serving eight years and seven months in jail. The judge granted the MC two-and-a-half years of post-release supervision stemming from his 2001 guilty verdict conviction for his involvement in a New York City nightclub shooting that involved Diddy and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez.
After years of rumors that spread saying that the Brooklyn rapper would be coming out of prison, the reality is finally there for Barrow. The artist’s attorney Oscar Michelen believed that the rumors that surrounded his client’s release dates over the years were the results of misinterpretation of legal filings and computer error. “I think [the rumor] was created by a computer,” he said, “because the Department of Corrections has a web site where you can do an inmate look-up. And if you have the information it will show you that [Barrow’s] earlier release date was originally April and then June (2009).”
The December 1999 incident that resulted in charges being brought against the then 22-year-old Barrow and Diddy, made plenty of headlines. The rapper was found guilty of first-degree assault and received a 10 yearprison sentence after a woman was accidentally shot in the face following an altercation between clubgoers and Diddy’s entourage.
At the time of the shooting Barrow, who goes now by Moses Levi after converting to Judaism was a rising talent in the music industry and with his husky baritone voice, sharp lyrics and captivating presence; the rapper who sounded just like former Bad Boy Recording artist Notorious B.I.G. was well respected by his peers.
After the trial, Diddy was acquitted on all counts.
As for fans of the rapper the question remains what’s next for the former Bad Boy artist and will he eventually pick up where he left off?
Barrow will be release on October 6, 2009.
