Roberto Carlos told Spanish newspaper Marca that he would be ending his career at the end of 2012. The Brazilian defensive midfielder will be holding a press conference Monday to confirm his decision.
The current player/manager of Anzhi Makhachkala has played for Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Fenerbahçe and Corinthians.
The former international has a long list of accomplishments to his name. Over the course of his 17-year career, he has won the 2002 World Cup, three Champions League titles and four national titles in Spain with Real Madrid.
Known for his spectacular goals, he finished second at the Fifa Ballon d’Or awards in 2002.
The Brazilian player has already found a new challenge. He will take on the position as assistant to Suleiman Kerimov, the Russian club’s president.
