Every year a new artist emerges to bring back the old glory of Soul music but singer and songwriter Raheem DeVaughn who has been perfecting his craft as a young man has been determined from the beginning of his career to be the best.
The son of jazz cellist Abdul Wadud, Maryland-based R&B vocalist DeVaughn has been one of the faces that critics have proclaimed as something fresh.
Introduced to the world in 2005 with the release of his debut album, “The Love Experience,” DeVaughn has always strived to create the perfect harmony of old school grooves and new school vibes. After winning $2,000 in a talent contest, DeVaughn who has played everywhere from Japan to Jamaica invested all of his winnings to release a series of independent mix tapes. It didn’t’ take long for music experts to see his talent, particularly Jive Records who signed him to their label.
When “The Love Experience,” was released the album peaked within the Top 50 of the Billboard 200 album chart, spawning the hit singles, “You” and “Guess Who Loves You More.”
DeVaughn, sophomore album, “Love Behind the Melody,” was released to critical acclaimed in 2008 and the singer was nominated that same year for a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the Chucky Thompson produced laidback groove and vocal charming single, “Woman.”
Thought he didn’t’ win the coveted statuette, the soulful singer who has worked with a roster of A-list producers from Mark Batson, Kenny Dope, Chucky Thompson, Bryan Cox and Scott Storch, has not been afraid to said that he is one of the most slept on artists out right now.
The latest video of his new lead single “Bulletproof” featuring rapper Ludacris from his upcoming album “The Love & War MasterPeace” was released on October 22.
Based on the joyful exuberance emanating from his last two albums, “The Love Experience,” and “Love Behind the Melody,” with time and more steady growth this underdog who has been compared to Dwele, Van Hunt, D’Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder will certainly produce better ballads to the delight of his fans.
