Rafael Nadal will be Spain’s flag-bearer for the upcoming Olympic Games in London. The Spanish sporting federations unanimously chose the seven-time winner of the French Open and reigning Olympic champion. Nadal beat out sailors Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez, who won gold in Athens and silver in Beijing in the 49er class. Like Novak Djokovic for Serbia and Maria Sharapova for Russia, yet another tennis player will have the honour of leading his delegation at the opening ceremony.
As soon as the news was made official, Rafa posted a message of thanks on social networking sites, saying “It’s an honor for me to be the carrier of the Spanish flag at the London Olympics and I would like to thank all the Spanish Olympic federations for choosing me for this. It’s one of the happiest moments of my career. Thanks to all and all the best of lucks to our Olympic team!”
