Queen Latifah

Two of hip-hop’s most respected artists are hitting the big screen on May 14 in the US, this time to navigate the world of love and basketball in “Just Wright.” Queen Latifah stars alongside another rapper/actor, Common, in her latest, self-produced movie. But the top-notch talent doesn’t stop there. Pam Grier, Phylicia Rashad, Dwayne Wade and Dwight Howard are just a few of the familiar faces that make appearances in the film.

As for the role of the woman who started her career in 1988 by beatboxing, Latifah plays Leslie Wright, a physical therapist who ends up treating New Jersey Nets star Scott Mcknight (Common) after an injury leaves him on the sidelines. As the two build a professional relationship things take a romantic turn. The problem? Leslie’s drop-dead gorgeous cousin Morgan (Paula Patton) is set on snagging Scott for herself so she can live the lifestyle of an NBA wife.

Not only did Queen Latifah and Common spend a lot of time together onscreen, with a movie to promote, it only makes sense that they hooked for a song as well. The stars collaborated on “Next Time (Just Wright),” the lead single off both the movie’s soundtrack and Common’s upcoming greatest hits album “Go!Common Classics,” to be released May 25.

Both rappers-turned-actors have been dabbling in film for years. Latifah’s film career started back in 1991, with a role in the Spike Lee directed movie “Jungle Fever,” while Common’s acting debut occurred more recently with his role in “Smokin’ Aces” in 2007 (the first movie in which he portrays someone other than himself).
