Young Money’s first lady Nicki Minaj seems almost hyperactive, judging from the numerous collaborations and solo tracks she keeps dropping, thus building a solid buzz to prepare her upcoming debut release.
The self proclaimed ‘Harajuku Barbie’ reigns from Jamaica Queens, New York and is a triple threat: writer, singer and rapper. Minaj first entered the music world by singing background vocals and hooks for local rappers, but in order to stand out, she began writing rhymes and became a member in an all female hip hop group, which she left in 2006.
Minaj then quickly caught the attention of Young Money’s CEO Fendi on Myspace, who signed her to the successful label. It did not take long for Lil Wayne to understand her potential and soon enough the two collaborated on various mixtapes: it was now clear that Minaj was a Young Money affiliate, and what’s more she became Li Wayne’s protégée. Besides her Young Money posse, Minaj has also worked with other artists such as Gucci Mane, Bow Wow and Teairra Mari, establishing her signature rap style and sexy image.
Minaj’s musical work includes mixtapes “Playtime Is Over,” “Sucka Free” and her most recent popular project, “Beam Me Up Scotty,” which gained positive coverage by BET and MTV. She recently taped a freestyle cipher for the 2009 BET Hip-Hop Awards, which also included Joe Budden and Wale. Although the track “I Get Crazy” has been getting a lot of radio spins, Minaj says that it will not be her first official single.
The female MC recently announced that her album was ready for release, but she was just waiting for the right time to drop it. Indeed, with the numerous upcoming Cash Money releases, she has to pick her date taking into account her labelmates projects, such as the Young Money compilation album due in November. Until then, Nicki is planning on keeping herself busy, through appearances on upcoming songs with Mariah Carey, Cassie, and Usher.
Nicki Minaj is set to drop her official debut album early 2010. Be prepared for Young Money’s first lady’s next move!
