Nas and Kelis

It’s official. One of hip-hop’s favorite former couples, Nas and Kelis, has finalized their divorce. Legal documents were filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday, May 21 showing that the pair’s marriage has officially been terminated. The couple originally filed for divorce in April 2009, with then pregnant Kelis citing “irreconcilable differences” as the cause for the split. After about a year of public legal battles, the issue of marriage is now squared away.

The spousal/child support and custody battles, however, continue. Nas is currently ordered to pay Kelis $10,000 a month in spousal support, a sum that the rapper says he cannot afford. He has been working to get that figure reduced, claiming that does not earn enough to keep up with those payments.

While Kelis has mentioned that baby Knight has inspired her work for her upcoming, will.i.am produced album, “Fleshtones.” Nas has said that his work with reggae artist Damian Marley on their upcoming album “Distant Relatives,” has helped him get through the recent tough times.
