Mary J. Blige’s protegée: Starshell

Up-and-coming artist Starshell is bringing her infectious sounds and moving beats to the music scene. The young singer signed to Mary J. Blige’s Matriarch/Geffen Records, released her debut single “Superluva” last month. The song was produced by famed music producer Fernando Garibay who has worked with Lady Gaga or Britney Spears to name a few. A video for the song was also released that same month it was directed by Petro.

Not new to the industry, the accomplished songwriter who has co-penned several songs, most notably “Love Lockdown” for Kanye West and “I Can See in Color” and “Closer” plus new songs for Mary J. Bligé met the diva and her husband Matriach President Kendu Isaccs in 2008 and days later the young singer was in the studio recording songs with alongside, Marsha Ambrosius and the diva herself.

Of her new rising star, Blige said, “Starshell is not someone who wanted to be a star; she always knew she would be. She knew what she wanted then and she knows exactly what she wants now. She has a beautiful spirit, a beautiful heart and so much integrity and intelligence.”

After three months of studio time and female bonding, the trio impromptu writing session was able to attract some of the best creative and talented producer such as will.i.am, Scott Storch, Jerry Wonda, Swizz Beats, Ne-Yo, Jeff Bhasker and Martin Kierszenbaum, to work on the yet-untitled debut album.

In “superluva,” the 21-year-old singer whose real name is LaNeah Menzies goes back in time to channel her own 1985 sci-fi flick, sporting different retro looks while commanding a group of backup dancers while posing with her mentor who makes a quick cameo.

In a recent media report, Starshell explained the concept of her 80′s inspired production by saying, “the concept of the video came from the idea of creating your perfect mate or Superluva. The lead stud in my video created his perfect woman. I come to him and take him into my world, where I can be the sexy homegirl, the fun party girl, the super hero magical sexy woman of your dreams and the diva.”

During her college years at George Washington University, Starshell began writing songs with Tremaine Lewis, son of music production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis as well as brushing up on her musical interests by watching countless hours of “Soul Train” and MTV.

Starshell‘s new album will be released in 2011.
