After a year full of highs and lows involving a new baby and divorce, electrifying R&B singer Kelis is ready to make her return to the music scene.
With new music, a new record label, and a new album, Kelis unleashed the good news to fans via Twitter on Monday, November 23rd, with a new track for her fans to jam to. The song is the apparent lead single for her upcoming untitled album.
The new single “Acapella” is another daring dance track filled with house and dance tints, produced by French DJ David Guetta. The theme behind the track involves her life, which mostly caters to her son Knight, who was born last summer. Over the uptempo beat, the hook explains it all as she sings, “Before you my whole life was acapella… Now a symphony is the only song to sing.” Seems like someone is happy and newly rejuvenated with the changes in their life, right?
Everyone was wondering who was Kelis when she made her debut in 1998 with The Neptunes-produced album “Kaleidoscope.” Through out the years Kelis continued with three more albums, “Wanderland,” “Tasty,” and “Kelis Was Here,” powered by popular radio hits like “Milkshake,” “Trick Me” and “Bossy.” In 2005, Kelis jumped the stick as she married New York rapper Nas. However, after a 4-year relationship, they filed for divorce in April 2009. Since then, they have been fighting in court over child support…
Along with this surprising single, Kelis also confirmed that she is in the process of finishing up her album on Geffen Records through the Black Eyed Peas’ mastermind will.i.am’s label. The songstress is working with a bunch of electro producers amongst which Diplo, who used to date and work with M.I.A. and the collective Free School who wrote hit songs for chart-topping artists including Kid Cudi and the Black Eyed Peas just to name a few. Definitely a new direction for Kelis who seem to leave behind her R&B roots to head towards club-friendly dance music… But is this really for the best?
The album is set for release sometime in Spring 2010.
