Jessie J (né Jessica Cornish) does not fit the cookie-cutter mold of a typical pop star. She’s a hardcore, razor-sharp, jet black bob-wearing, tough as nails chick. But don’t get it twisted. She is pop.
The UK singer/songwriter made a name for herself in the music industry by penning songs for pop and R&B heavyweights like Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, and Miley Cyrus.
She launched her solo career in 2010 with the chart-topping single “Do It Like a Dude,” a song she originally wrote for Rihanna. About the song she says, “I was getting a bit fed up with the way women have to sell themselves to be noticed,” she told Mirror. “‘Do It Like a Dude’ was sticking my finger up at that. You’ve got to have balls and go for things, feel confident, not just be girlie.”
And that’s exactly what the 22-year-old is doing. She’s mixing pop with hip-hop and soul to create a style that’s all her own and she’s garnering a lot of attention for it. She recently won the prestigious Critics Choice Award at The BRIT Awards and the BBC’s Sound of 2011 Award. Also, her second single, the up-tempo “Price Tag,” featuring Atlanta rapper B.o.B, recently became her first number one single.
Jessie J’s debut album, “Who You Are,” is already out in the Europe and will be released in the U.S. on April 12. She kicks off her UK tour on March 31 in Glasgow…
