Hip-Hop lyrics debate

Akon believes that hip-hop’s lyrics could stand to be a bit cleaner, Yahoo’s UK site reports.

Akon sided with critics such as the Rev. Al Sharpton, who has called for offensive lyrics such as “n***r,” “b***ch” and “ho” to be removed from hip-hop music. “I think words like that are not necessarily needed in the song to make it a hit,” he said.

He went on to add that he would have no problems cleaning up his sometimes-spicy lyrics. “Me personally, I would have no problem getting rid of it, words on any record for anybody. I think we are talented enough to write lyrics for songs without using that type of language,” he said. “I think it’s a good thing for positivity of hip-hop in general.”

However, he did add that he believed that words are simply what you make them. “At the end of the day, it’s just a word—it wouldn’t mean anything if we didn’t react on it on it, so it’s more of a mindstate, people just have to be willing to change.”

We’ll see whether the Senegalese singer will be heard or not…
