Guru

Rapper Keith “Guru” Elam will undergo surgery today, Mars 1, after suffering a major heart attack that put the 43-year-old MC in a coma. The Gang Starr rapper was rushed to the hospital over the weekend after suffering cardiac arrest. It has been reported that he is currently undergoing surgery in a New York hospital.

Guru’s right-hand music man and the other half of Gang Starr, DJ Premier, used his Twitter account to update fans. “#guru is getting ready for surgery, pray for the best!,” Premier tweeted on Monday.

Guru first made his way to the MC arena in the ‘80s, garnering buzz for his unique sound and intelligent lyrics. The MC teamed up with DJ Premiere to form Gang Starr, a duo that was a staple on the early ‘90’s underground rap scene. Guru ventured into solo territory in 1993, combining elements of Jazz with hip-hop to produce “Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1.” He produced three other Jazzmatazz albums before releasing his most recent solo effort “Lost and Found” in May 2009.
