Season-three “American Idol” winner Fantasia Barrino has been hospitalized in North Carolina for a drug overdose after an apparent suicide attempt, WBTV reports.
The CBS affiliate cites a police report filed with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg precinct, in which officers were notified late Monday evening by Fantasia’s manager, Brian Dickens, that something was wrong with the former “Color Purple” star.
According to the police sources, the officers who arrived on the scene reportedly found Barrino in the closet of a home in the Glynmoor Lakes neighborhood. The fomer “Idol” champ was immediately taken to the hospital
The police report classified Barrino’s condition as a “suicide/overdose” and described her as having suffered “possible internal injuries” after she ingested too much medication. New information on the incident reveals that Fantasia overdosed on aspirin and sleep aid. Fantasia’s manager Brian Dickens put out a statement saying “Fantasia has been released from the hospital. She has been lifted up by the outpouring of love and support from her fans. She is more committed than ever to her daughter and her work because they are her heart, her soul and inspiration.” Fantasia had been involved with a man named Antwaun Cook whose wife, Paula, had filed for divorce, and Dickens said the resulting controversy and media storm “overwhelmed” the singer.
Fantasia has a new album, “Back to Me,” due out on August 24.
