Electrik Red, a funky quartet of former back-up dancers, released their Def Jam debut this week, “How to Be a Lady: Vol. 1.” The ironically titled album features a selection of empowering, unapologetic R&B-pop songs, many of which might make your mother blush based on lyrical content alone.
Despite these four beauties’ conviction for four letter words and man-eater tendencies, Kyndra “Binkie” Reeves, Lesley Lewis, Sarah Rosette and Naomi Allen deliver quality vocals to prove they are as talented as they are entertaining. Naomi, who has a voice reminiscent of Kelis’, sings lead on most of the tracks, including the remixed version of their current single “So Good,” which features rapper Lil’ Wayne.
“How to Be a Lady” was written and produced in two weeks by The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. This duo also masterminded Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies, ” among other hits.
Cute, quirky and seemingly fearless, Electrik Red has the potential to fill the void that break-ups have left in the urban girl group department. Fans of Destiny’s Child, En Vogue or even Danity Kane just may find what they’ve been missing in Red.
