Daddy Yankee, the top-selling “urban latin artist of the decade” according to Billboard Magazine, will release his ninth studio album on April 27. “Daddy Yankee Mundial” is a 13-track record that ranges from introspective hip-hop to upbeat reggaeton.
“Grito Mundial,” the album’s energized, trumpet and whistle driven first single, sounds a lot like a sports anthem. This is no coincidence seeing that the World Cup will take place this summer… Indeed, “Grito Mundial” (World Shout) was proposed as the anthem of the soccer championship, though it was not chosen. The second single, “Descontrol,” hit airwaves in January 2010.
For the most part, Daddy Yankee has taken his music matters into his own hands this time around. The sole feature on “Daddy Yankee Mundial” comes from Tito “El Bambino,” who rose to fame as Tito from the reggaeton duo Héctor & Tito. Also, the album will be released on Yankee’s own label, El Kartel.
Daddy Yankee has been active in the music industry since 1995, when he released his debut album, “No Mercy.” However, his big year was 2004, when his album “Barrio Fino” sold 2 million copies. In 2006, he was named one of the 100 most influential people by “Time Magazine.” Outside of music, he will appear on the soap-opera “The Bold and The Beautiful” for ten episodes, to be broadcast in June 2010.
