R&B/Soul singer Bilal has announced that he will finally release a follow-up album to his critically acclaimed debut, “1st Born Second.” The new album is slated for release in early 2010.
The “Soul Sista” singer first emerged on the neo-soul scene in 2001. He is part of the Soulquarians collective, which also includes Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Q-tip and ?uestLove of The Roots.
In 2003, Bilal was dropped from his label and his intended second album, “Love For Sale,” was leaked. Fans responded positively to the unauthorized music although it was never officially released to the general public. Due to fan support, Bilal eventually continued to perform and record despite his setbacks.
This latest effort picks up where “Love for Sale” left off. “This time I’ve taken that and mixed it with jazz and rock inflections. This record is about me discovering Steely Dan, John Lennon, and Bobby Womack,” said the 30-year-old singer in an interview with Billboard.com. He is now signed to indie label Plug Research.
