African designers

The Global style magazine, “Arise Magazine” has given three African fashion designers a chance to showcase their collection at this years New York Fashion Week taking place in February.

The three top African designers who will be showcasing on February 13 are Black Coffee from South Africa, Deola Sagoe from Nigeria and Loin Cloth and Ashes from Tanzania.

South African designer Jacques van der Watts, of the label Black Coffee, hails from Johannesburg and has won several African fashion awards. Black Coffee has also just done the Berlin Fashion Week 2010.

Deola Sagoe from Nigeria showcased at the New York Fashion week ten years ago and is admired for her use of color and woven fabrics.

New to the fashion industry is the Tanzanian designer Anisa Pumgwe who only launched her label Loin Cloth and Ashes in 2008. The fashion designer is inspired by music, art and mood swings.

Most African designers have only dreamt of showcasing their work on a global stage such as the New York Fashion Week but for these three designers it’s a reality and the world is watching to see what Africa has to offer.
