Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer Prize for his album DAMN., the first rap album to ever win the prestigious award.
The news was announced on Monday April 16. Kendrick Lamar won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for music for his latest studio album DAMN. and made history at the same time. Indeed, he just became the first rapper to ever win the prestigious prize. Until now, the prize had only been rewarded to classical music artists or jazz artists.
The Pulitzer board on Monday hailed DAMN., which was released in April 2017, as “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”

Last February, Kendrick Lamar won five Grammys but was “robbed” of the Album of the Year that the Academy chose to give to Bruno Mars. The Pulitzer sounds like a sweet revenge and a nice consolation prize for the Compton MC.
