When you hear Drake‘s hit “Hotline Bling“, do you think of the church? The answer is no, obviously. However you’ll be surprised to learn that the song has been a major hit in a church in Atlanta.
Yes, that’s real, the “Purpose-Driven Church Family committed to the Kingdom” has recently posted on social networks; a video of its choir singing the song by the Canadian rapper with their own words. The video features enthusiastic vocals and lots of bouncing onstage, the singers seem to have fun as they’re dancing and screaming…
According to the pastor, they make covers of famous songs to reach more people. It is important to him to adapt themselves to people’s mentality – a way to bring them closer to God. He says that he’s not looking for the buzz, he stated “Our target is really un-churched people, or people that have been hurt by religion so we kind of go out of our way to make people feel welcome, and realize that cultural stuff is man-made and negotiable. We really need to do whatever we can to connect people to Jesus.”
So, the lyrics « Ever since I left the city you/Got a reputation for yourself now/Everybody knows and I feel left out » become « Even before I gave my life to You/ You had a reputation for Yourself now/ Father to the ones who feeling left out. »
