On Monday, March 26, Virgil Abloh was named artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear line, making him the first Black person to lead the brand’s menswear line.
Here are 5 things you need to know about the fashion designer.
1. His parents are originally from Ghana
Some of you might have guessed it from his family name. Born in 1980 in Chicago, Illinois, Virgil Abloh is the son of two Ghanaian immigrants. His dad was a manager in a paint company while his mother was seamstress. Yaaaas African excellence !
2. He was previously known as Kanye West’s righ-hand man
In his early career, Abloh met Kanye West and they both interned at Fendi in 2009. He then became the rapper’s creative director overseeing everything from tour merch to album covers. For instance, Virgil is responsible for the artistic director of the legendary Watch The Throne album alongside Riccardo Tisci.
3. He initially studied architecture
Fashion has always been a hobby for young Virgil. Although he’s always been interested in art and fashion, he studied and graduated in both civil engineering and architecture.
4. He’s married to his high school sweetheart
Virgil refers to his wife Shannon as his first muse. The two met in high school and have been married almost ten years. They have two children, a daughter and a son called Lowe and Grey.
5. He created Off-White in 2013
In the last few years, Abloh blew up as the artistic director and founder of his own streetwear label Off-White based in Milan. The brand’s multiple collaborations with Nike, Jimmy Choo, Levi’s, Moncler or even Ikea really helped settle Off-White and Virgil as safe values in the fashion world.
The ready-to-wear brand blends street inspirations and sophisticated and has become adulated by millennial as much as celebrities such as Rihanna or Jaden Smith. And it looks like the hype will not end so soon.
