Nigerian music legend William Onyeabor has died

According to numerous sources, Nigerian musician William Onyeabor passed away on Monday (Jan 16). He was 70.

The artist who started his career in the late 1970’s with the studio album Crashes in Love released no less than nine albums between 1977 and 1985. A native of the city of Enugu, he was considered like a pioneer of Nigerian electro-funk music. However, it was only in 2013 with the release of a compilation titled Who Is William Onyeabor, that he received international attention.

Following the news, David Byrne of Luaka Bop label (that released the compilation) expressed his condolences on Facebook. “It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we have to announce that the great Nigerian business leader and mythic music pioneer William Onyeabor has passed away at the age of 70”, he wrote.

The cause of Onyeabor’s death has not been announced yet. The musician is survived by his wife, four children and four grandchildren.

May he rest in peace.
