The talk of a Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather fight is not fading out.
As the 28-year-old UFC lightweight champion, Conor McGregor has made his first serious move toward a proposed superfight against boxing immortal Floyd Mayweather by obtaining a boxing licence to fight in California on Thursday. So what? For Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, that doesn’t make a dream fight between the UFC king and boxing king Floyd Mayweather any more likely to become a reality.
In an article in which ESPN senior writer Dan Rafael says there’s “no chance” the fight happens. Rafael’s conclusion implies that Mayweather has zero interest in fighting McGregor and it’s not because Mayweather is afraid; it’s that his camp believes McGregor is beneath him.
The undefeated boxer
Ellebre told ESPN’s Dan Rafael that UFC wouldn’t let one of their top stars take on an undefeated boxer.
« It’s all a game. It’s all a calculated effort to gain more fans. He got a boxing license. Congratulations to him. Conor McGregor can say anything he wants to but he has a boss and his name is [UFC president] Dana White. He is under contract to the UFC and if he wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match he can’t because his bosses wouldn’t allow that to happen. The brass [from WME-IMG] who recently purchased the UFC [for $4 billion earlier this year] are very smart people and they would never — and put this in bold caps — let him step into a boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather because everyone knows what the outcome would be. He would get his ass beat from pillar to post. »
But it doesn’t quite stop there, Mayweather’s promotion camp believes sports fans are ONLY captivated by the idea of a Mayweather-McGregor fight because of rac. Mayweather is actually in the Bahamas enjoying life and is paying McGregor no mind. He claims it’s all a con from McGregor to drum up attention by aligning himself with a big name.
While the prospects of two of the most exciting fighters in the world facing off remains titillating, it seems this fight may never actually happen. Guess we’ll just have to wait to find out !
